         The plan for harnessing the river for irrigation and power generation in the narmada river. 

     -   Initiated in 1946
     
     -   Sardar Sarover Dam is built on                 narmada river kevadiya near                         navagham in Gujarat india. 

     -   Narmada river largest lined                        irrigation canal in  the world. 
     
     -   It is about 458km
 
     -   long up to Gujarat - Rajasthan                   border 
         
     -   it has capacity to flow 1133 cumes
          (40,000 cusec ) 
    
     -   Main Dam - 1,210 m long, 163 m                   high from the deepest foundation                 level
        
      -    Designed Live Storage Capacity of                 the  Reservoir 5860 MCM
       
      -    Drinking Water - 9490 villages                      and     173 towns (30 million                            people)
     
                Four indian states Gujarat,                        Madhyapradesh, Maharashtra, 
          Rajasthan receive water and                          power Supply from dam.

              The foundation stone of the project 
      Was laid out by Jawaharlal nehru 5                April  1961.
               
               2000-2001 the project was revived          but lower hight of 110 meters under 
      Direction of SC, which was increased in        2006 to 121.92 meters and 138.98 in 2017
