What is the History of Friendship day?
The history of Friendship Day began with the idea of Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards in the 1920s. Friendship day was proposed to celebrate and honour the Friendship Day on 2nd August by sending greeting cards and other items as the holiday celebrations. One story says that the idea of celebrating Friendship day was further promoted by the greeting card National Association during the 1920s but was not taken in a healthy spirit as it reflected the commercial gimmick to promote the greeting cards in the name of Friendship Day.

The day was then officially initiated by the United States (US) Congress that decided to dedicate the Friendship day in the honor of friends. It is not known what were the reasons that went for initiating the day. It is said that after the First World War hostilities, mistrust, and hatred between countries were increased and was leading to another imminent battle. At this time, there was a greater need for friendship and camaraderie among nations & among individuals.

Therefore, the US Congress made the decision to designate the first Sunday of the month of August as Friendship Day. It was formally proclaimed in the year 1935. The day was officially declared as a holiday dedicated to the honour of friends & friendship. After this, the celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event. The idea of celebrating & honoring the beautiful relationship of friendship became famous with the people, particularly among the youngsters all over the US. Later, Friendship Day became a highly popular festival. The celebration of Friendship Day was not limited to the US alone. With time, several other countries adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to the cause of friendship. Many nations joined in the celebration and Friendship Day soon became International Friendship Day
It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.
